If you’re using
traditional paraffin candles over soy wax candles and melts, then you could be
missing out on a range of benefits for your health, home and wallet. In fact,
burning soy wax candles and melts is a much better option than traditional
paraffin for many reasons. We’ll take you through some of the benefits in this
post and maybe by the end, you’ll be convinced to choose soy wax candles and
melts as your products of choice.
Soy Wax is Natural
Derived from the
soybean, soy wax is a hydrogenated vegetable oil that turns to a solid at room
temperature. Soy wax contains nothing artificial which makes it a better
alternative to old-fashioned paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is made from petroleum
oil and produces harmful by-products when burned or melted.
Soy Wax Delivers a
Cleaner Burn
A candle or melt made
from soy wax burns cleaner with little soot released. Paraffin candles and
melts often create a significant amount of black soot that collects on the jar,
as well as on your walls and other surfaces of the home. The soy wax may
accumulate some black soot on the jar, but the amount is much less than
paraffin candles. Soy candles and melt are also non-toxic, so they won’t
release toxins into the air as they burn.
Soy Wax Does Not
Release Toxins Into the Air
Soy wax is a
healthier alternative to paraffin wax in that it does not release dangerous
carcinogens into the air when melted like paraffin wax does. Burning and/or
melting paraffin releases at least 11 known toxins including acetone, benzene
and toluene.
Soy Wax is
Environmentally Friendly
Since soy wax is
made from soybeans, it is friendly to the environment because soybeans are a
renewable resource. Paraffin wax comes from petroleum, which is not a renewable
resource. This is especially important if you are pregnant, have children, or
have pets because it’s the safe option health-wise.
Soy Wax has a
Lower Melting Point
From a safety
aspect, soy wax is the better choice because it has a lower melting point than
paraffin wax. This means less risk of burns should you accidentally spill any
melted wax on your skin.
Soy Wax is Cheaper
While soy wax
candles are sometimes more expensive to purchase than paraffin wax ones, they
last up to 50 per cent longer and are more cost-effective in the long run.
Making it even more cost-effective is the fact that soy wax burns more evenly,
so less wax is left clinging to the sides of the glass as waste. You can wash
your soy candle container, reuse and re-purpose it.
Soy Wax Scents are
Purer
“Throw” refers to
the release of fragrance from a candle: the “cold throw” is the scent released
when a candle is unlit at room temperature, the “hot throw” is the scent
released when the candle is burning. Due to the petroleum base of paraffin wax,
it tends to emit a chemical-smelling fragrance. Because soy wax comes from a
natural source, it emits a more pure, true expression of the same fragrance
than paraffin wax.
